How Adaptogens Can Improve Hormonal Function & Skin Health

How Adaptogens Can Improve Hormonal Function & Skin Health

I have added adaptogens into my dietary supplement protocol the last 3 months and I have noticed a HUGE difference in my hormonal function (especially my PMS). My PMS had become debilitating because of adrenal issues I have been dealing with. My heart rate would shoot up to 120bpm when I would wake up in the morning and would then randomly spike throughout the day, leaving me feeling like I was constantly on a treadmill with dizzy spells. Although I am working with an Endocrinologist on taking some pharmaceuticals for this, I had to also take matters into my own hands and adjusted my diet & supplement protocol. The one key thing I changed was adding adaptogens to my protocol. For those of you who are not familiar with them, adaptogens are a group of herbs and natural substances that help the body adapt to stress and maintain a healthy balance. They have been used for centuries in traditional medicine, particularly in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine. Recently, adaptogens have gained popularity for their ability to improve hormonal function and promote healthy skin.

Hormonal balance is essential for overall health, including skin health. Hormonal imbalances can cause acne, wrinkles, and other skin issues. Without getting too nerdy on you guys, adaptogens can help restore hormonal balance by regulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. The HPA axis is responsible for regulating the body's response to stress and is closely linked to hormonal function. Adaptogens can help regulate the HPA axis, which can lead to improved hormonal function.

Here are some of the most popular adaptogens and their benefits for hormonal function and skin health:

  1. Ashwagandha: Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine. It has been shown to reduce cortisol levels, a hormone released during times of stress, which can lead to improved hormonal balance. Ashwagandha also has antioxidant properties that can help protect the skin from oxidative stress and reduce inflammation, which can contribute to acne and other skin issues.

  2. Rhodiola: Rhodiola is another adaptogenic herb that has been shown to improve hormonal balance. It can reduce cortisol levels and increase levels of serotonin and dopamine, two neurotransmitters that play a role in mood regulation. Rhodiola also has anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce skin inflammation and promote healthy skin.

  3. Maca: Maca is a root vegetable that has been used for centuries in traditional medicine. It is rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, and has been shown to improve hormonal function in both men and women. Maca can also help increase collagen production, which can lead to improved skin elasticity and reduced wrinkles.

  4. Holy Basil: Holy basil is an adaptogenic herb commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine. It has been shown to reduce cortisol levels and improve hormonal balance. Holy basil also has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce acne and other skin issues.

  5. Schisandra: Schisandra is an adaptogenic berry that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. It can improve hormonal balance by regulating the HPA axis. Schisandra also has antioxidant properties that can help protect the skin from oxidative stress and promote healthy skin.

Additionally, adaptogens have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can protect the skin from oxidative stress and reduce inflammation, which can contribute to acne and other skin issues. If you are considering using adaptogens for hormonal balance or skin health, be sure to talk to your healthcare provider to determine the best approach for you. I have been working with a customized supplement formula based on what my body needs. In addition to that, I have also been drinking this product everyday that has maca and has done wonders for me.
